Trump refuses to rule out national security emergency over elections

 President Donald Trump did not dismiss a suggestion from conservative host Wayne Allyn Root to declare a national security emergency to bypass Congress on election security measures.

When asked about declaring an emergency to force new voting rules before the midterms, Trump cryptically responded that “stranger things have happened.”

The proposal aims to unilaterally enforce photo ID requirements, proof of U.S. citizenship and restrictions on mail-in ballots through the stalled SAVE Act.

Constitutional experts emphasize that the president lacks legal authority to change election rules, as the U.S. Constitution grants Congress sole authority to regulate federal elections.

Federal courts have already blocked previous executive orders by Trump that attempted to restrict mail-in voting and involve federal officials in state election administration.
